The 40% rule, and where it breaks
The 40% rule is a starting filter, not gospel. It works because most laptop repairs are either cheap (software, storage, battery, keyboard) or expensive (board-level, GPU, display assembly on premium models), with very little in between. Once a quote crosses roughly 40% of replacement cost, you are effectively paying a large deposit on hardware that is already partway through its life.
Where the rule breaks is on high-specification machines. A ₹9,000 logic-board repair on a MacBook Pro or a workstation laptop is trivially worth it, because a replacement of equal capability costs many times that. The rule also breaks in the other direction: a ₹4,000 repair on a low-end machine with soldered 4 GB RAM is money spent to keep something slow.
The third factor most people forget is data. If your files are the valuable thing, the correct first spend is recovery and backup, then the repair decision. We image drives before risky board work for exactly this reason.

Is there a simple rule for repair vs. replace?
Yes — the 40% rule. If the repair quote is under 40% of what an equivalent replacement costs and the laptop is under about seven years old, repairing is almost always the better financial decision. Above 40% on an ageing machine, replacement usually wins over a two-year horizon.
How old is too old to repair a laptop?
Age alone is not the test; parts availability and platform capability are. A 2016 laptop with a working chassis, upgradeable RAM and an M.2 slot is worth repairing. A machine with soldered 4 GB RAM, no SSD slot and a discontinued panel usually is not, because even a perfect repair leaves you with a machine that struggles.
Will a repair void my manufacturer warranty?
If the laptop is still inside the brand warranty, use the brand service centre — we will tell you so, and we do not charge for that advice. Third-party repair on an in-warranty device can void coverage. Once the warranty has expired, independent chip-level repair is typically a fraction of the board-replacement price.
