Laptop Liquid Damage First Aid — What to Do in the First 60 Seconds
The next 60 seconds after a spill decide whether your laptop survives. Here's exactly what to do.
Tea, coffee, water, juice — every day, laptops arrive at our lab drenched. If you act in the first 60 seconds, the survival rate is above 85%. If you don't, it drops below 30%.
1. Hold the power button for 10 seconds until the laptop is fully off. Do not try to save your work — save the laptop.
2. Unplug the charger.
3. If your laptop has a removable battery, remove it. If not, do not open the laptop yourself.
4. Flip the laptop upside down, open like a tent, on a towel. Let liquid drain out for 30 minutes.
5. Do not use rice. It does nothing.
6. Do not power the laptop on 'just to check'. Every second powered wet corrodes traces.
