Laptop Liquid Damage First Aid — What to Do in the First 60 Seconds
The next 60 seconds after a spill decide whether your laptop survives. Here's exactly what to do.
Tea, coffee, water, juice — every day, laptops arrive at our lab drenched. If you act in the first 60 seconds, the survival rate is above 85%. If you don't, it drops below 30%.
- Hold the power button for 10 seconds until the laptop is fully off. Do not try to save your work — save the laptop.
- Unplug the charger.
- If your laptop has a removable battery, remove it. If not, do not open the laptop yourself.
- Flip the laptop upside down, open like a tent, on a towel. Let liquid drain out for 30 minutes.
- Do not use rice. It does nothing.
- Do not power the laptop on 'just to check'. Every second powered wet corrodes traces.
